#1097 ECHOES OF LOVE The Pointer Sisters
In 1978, the Pointer Sisters released their first album project with hot producer Richard Perry. He brought the trio a collection of songs from diverse sources. The result was a well accepted LP entitled 'Energy'. One of its tracks was "Echoes of Love".
The song had originally been recorded by The Doobie Brothers and included on their 1977 album, 'Livin' on the Fault Line'. Band member Patrick Simmons wrote the song with 2 songwriters with R&B credentials: Willie Mitchell and Earl Randle. Ruth, June & Anita infuse their combination of country and soul into the track almost in the reverse way the Doobies had previously done.

#1098 SUNSHINE SUPERMAN Donovan
Britain's coolest musical hippie back in the 1960s was Donovan. The singer was born Donovan Leitch in Glasgow. He penned this jangly, upbeat psychedelic-pop song that , when issued in 1966, became his first worldwide hit. Along with John Cameron's standout performance on the harpsichord, the track features a then unknown Jimmy Page on guitar. He of course later became famous as a member of both The Yardbirds and Led Zeppelin.

#1099 CARWASH Rose Royce
Rose Royce was busily working on their debut album with Norman Whitfield at the helm while the latter was negotiating with MCA Records to use his project for the soundtrack to an upcoming movie entitled 'Carwash', starring Richard Pryor. The songs that were already cut were now destined to feature on that film's soundtrack album. Rose Royce recorded additional songs for inclusion on that release. Whitfield wrote and produced the title song which became the group's breakthrough single. It is an upbeat, funky track with elements of disco. In 2004, "Carwash" was remade by Christina Aguilera and Missy Elliott for use in the animated film 'Shark Tale'.

#1100 RUNAWAY Del Shannon
Del Shannon's international hit remains one of the best examples of rock 'n roll/ pop from the years preceding the arrival of The Beatles. Released in 1961, the track was composed by the teen idol with keyboard player Max Crook. He was soon to become a chart force following this, er... runaway hit; following it up with "Little Town Flirt" and "The Swiss Maid"; all of which also made #1 in Australia. The clavioline Musitron solo from Crook makes the track stand out from the rest of that era's songs.

#1101 HANDY MAN James Taylor
Jimmy Jones recorded the original version of "Handy Man", written by the soul singer with Charles Merenstein and Otis Blackwell, in 1960. Seventeen years later, singer/ songwriter / guitarist James Taylor recorded a remake for his 'J.T.' album. He totally transformed the song; slowing it right down. This serves to reveal a fresh and deeper perspective for the lyrics. Taylor's gentle vocals perfectly complement the simplicity of his strumming on the guitar.

#1103 ONE Johnny Farnham
Harry Nilsson composed the song "One" and recorded the original version for his 1968 album 'Aerial Ballet'. Three Dog Night covered the song the following year and scored a US #5 hit. In Australia, it was reinterpreted by rising domestic superstar Johnny (as he was known back then) Farnham. His remake reached #4 on the Australian Top 40 in 1969.

#1104 GETTIN' READY FOR LOVE Diana Ross
The first track on Diana Ross' 1977 album, ' Baby, It's Me', finds the Queen of Motown further embracing the disco genre , while still satisfying her pop and R&B audiences. "Gettin' Ready for Love" was written by Franne Golde and Tom Snow. The latter has contributed songs for artists as diverse as Tom Jones, Anne Murray and Olivia Newton-John. Richard Perry was a super hot producer at this time and was at the helm for Ross' album.

#1105 SMOOTH OPERATOR Sade
Fusing the traditions of jazz with elements of soul and quiet storm, Sade offered many gorgeous examples of cruisy, chillout tracks. "Smooth Operator" is arguably the coolest. Its smooth, sophisticated production accentuates the lush and seductive sound of lead vocalist Sade Adu's tonsils. This was the group's breakthrough single, from its 1984 'Diamond Life' album; penned by Adu, with Antonio Hardy, Clyde Otis and Murray Stein.

Relegated to the B-side of ABBA's hit song "Chiquitita", the non-album track "Lovelight" was a pleasant delight for any fan who bothered to flip the single over. Benny Andersson & Bjorn Ulvaeus poured just as many pop hooks into this cut as they had on their 1979 disco-flavoured abum 'Voulez Vous'. Both Agnetha Faltskog and Frida Lyngstad deliver lead vocals.This was added to the re-packaged editions of 'Voulez Vous'.
