Trivia:
To this day, speculation persists that chart compilers deliberately avoided counting all of the sales of The Sex Pistols' single "God Save The Queen" in order to avoid offending the monarchy and its supporters. It has been claimed that the single did outsell the 'official' #1 : Rod Stewart's double A-sided release "I Don't Want To Talk About It" b/w "The First Cut Is The Deepest". At the time the disc reached its chart peak on the UK Top 40, Elizabeth II was celebrating her Silver Jubilee.

Madonna first charted in
1982, but it was two years later that she became a household name. The song
that propelled her into the pop stratosphere was “Like A Virgin”. Few singers
would have dared to release a song with that title. Fewer still could get away
with lyrics like “touched for the very first time” while cavorting on a Venetian
gondola in the accompanying music video. The brash and brazen performer
harnessed the controversy she attracted and made the publicity suit her needs.
She would adopt the same strategy time and time again, each time further
entrenching herself in the record books and among popular culture’s most
recognizable personalities. Unlike many women before her, Madonna had an agenda
and was always in control. She sparked outrage but turned it back onto her
detractors. “Like A Virgin” was produced by Nile Rodgers of Chic fame. This was
Madonna’s first international smash. The single reached #1 in America, Europe,
Canada and Australia. In Britain, the disc peaked at #3. Since this first taste
of success, Madonna has managed to embrace emerging new trends in music or
innovative collaborators and never been afraid to re-invent herself. Among her
most interesting releases are the singles “Ray Of Light”, “Music”, “What It
Feels Like For A Girl” and “Vogue”. 
After the suicide of lead singer
Ian Curtis, the remaining members of Joy Division changed musical direction,
re-emerging as New Order. Its new wave roots were now blended with avant-garde electronic
dance music. New Order soaked up ideas from sources such as disco, Giorgio
Moroder and Kraftwerk to create a watershed dance classic. “Blue Monday”
remains the best-selling 12” disc of all-time. It achieved this because of its
timeless quality, resulting in several re-issues and remixes. The original single
was packaged in a sleeve that resembled a computer disc and did not feature the song title or group's name. Initially, this
imagery and the earliest New Order songs reflected the group’s dealing with
Curtis’ passing. As the surviving members found their niche, the music developed
a warmer and brighter tone. The group followed “Blue Monday” with a series of
key 80s dance tracks, including “True Faith”, “Bizarre Love Triangle”, “Shell
Shock”, “Touched By The Hand Of God” and “Regret”.
