Carole King delivered an album that remains a benchmark to this day: 'Tapestry'. Surpassing the quality of that collection of songs, however, proved to be impossible. In 1977, King had a new writing collaborator, her soon-to-be third spouse, Rick Evers. Together, they co-wrote some of the cuts on her next album, on new label Capitol Records. "Hard Rock Cafe" was the standout track on 'Simple Things'. This was one of the songs King penned alone.

#1146 IN A LIFETIME Clannad featuring Bono
Combining folk and rock with a Gaelic twist, Irish family group Clannad collaborated with fellow Irishman Bono from the rock band U2 for this haunting song.  Released in 1986, this hit introduced one key member of the group to a wider audience: Enya. Ciaran & Paul Brennan - 2 of the 6 members of Clannad - wrote the song.

#1147 I'M INTO SOMETHING GOOD Herman's Hermits
In 1964, Earl-Jean (McCrae), former member of the Cookies released her debut solo single. It was a song entitled "I'm Into Something Good", written by the prolific songwriting husband and wife team of Carole King and Gerry Goffin. That version failed to attract significant sales. It did become a hit, however, when British group Herman's Hermits covered the song a year later. It remains a catchy example of the Merseybeat sound that set the British Invasion of the Sixties in motion. Peter Noone's delivery is cute and irresisible throughout.

#1148 TRANS-CANADA HIGHWAY Gene Pitney
Willie Denson published over 250 songs in his lifetime. The songwriter co-wrote "Trans Canada Highway" with Gene Pitney, who also sang the 1975 hit single. The latter was an American-born performer who had enjoyed a consistent string of chart singles throughout the 1960s. By the time of this single's release, Pitney's chart run in both the US & UK was over. This song was only issued in Europe & Australia; it reached #15 in the latter territory.

This love song was featured on neo-soul vocalist India.Arie's second album, 'Voyage to India'; released in 2002, as the follow-up to her stunning debut LP. "Can I Walk With You" was first featured on the Motown soundtrack album for the film 'Bamboozled' 2 years previously. The track was written and produced by India Arie (credited to India Simpson) and Blue Miller.

Bonnie was originally a member of the Pointer Sisters, the family act which continued as a trio upon her decision to pursue a solo career in 1978. She signed with Motown and released this cover of the Elgins' 1966 hit; written by the label's hit songwriting team of Lamont Dozier with Eddie & Brian Holland. Pointer's version was released on her first Motown album, in 1978.

James Brown shook R&B like no other musician in the 1960s; laying the foundation for future trends such as funk, disco, rap and hip hop. It was written by Brown with Bobby Byrd and Ron Lenhoff.

Australian pop/ rock group Stylus featured blue-eyed soul vocalist Peter Cupples as its pivotal member. Formed in Sydney in 1974, the group recorded some smooth singles, but were usually in the bottom rungs of the Top 40 chart. Cupples wrote this song himself for the band and it was issued as a single in 1975. It was to be the band's highest charting single.
