HALLELUJAH
Jeff Buckley
(1994) #1
The singer only recorded 1 complete studio album, but 'Grace' remains a cherished disc, hinting at a talent that would never be fully realized. This remake of a Leonard Cohen song has gathered popularity in the wake of Buckley's tragic death in 1997. It has repeatedly been re-issued and resurfaced on charts around the world. In 2008, the track reached #1 in France.

VIVA LA VIDA
Coldplay

HOT STUFF
Donna Summer
(1979) #1
The disco track was injected with a shot of rock, a radical move in a genre often derided for its lack of creativity. Giorgio Moroder co-produced the cut with Pete Bellotte. The latter co-wrote the hit with Harold Faltermeyer and Keith Forsey. The guitar solo was contributed by Jeff "Skunk" Baxter of the Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan. This won the inaugural Best Female Rock Vocal Grammy Award. It enjoyed time at #1 in America, Japan, Canada and Australia.

GIRLS JUST WANT TO HAVE FUN
Cyndi Lauper
(1983) #1

BORN TO RUN
Bruce Springsteen
(1975)
Some songs percolate for a time before gaining legendary status. Although this single barely dented the charts, it has since became a signature song for the Boss. Its message of hope and escape has made it an anthem for the marginalised, downtrodden and, well, the everyman.

DON’T BE CRUEL
Elvis Presley
(1956) #1
Released as a double A-sided single with Elvis' cover of "Hound Dog" assured this disc would attract massive sales. This side topped the US Pop, Country and R&B charts.

Amy Winehouse
#139
AMY WINEHOUSE
Close your eyes while listening to an Any Winehouse album and you will hear echoes of Billie Holiday, Macy Gray, Ronnie Spector and Erykah Badu. The gifted vocalist was born in London in 1983.
Winehouse grew up surrounded by jazz musician uncles. When her demo tape was presented to the A&R rep at Island Records by her friend Tyler James, she was signed to the label. In 2003, her debut album 'Frank' was released. It received Brit Awards and an Ivor Novello.
Her abuse of alcohol hindered her live performances and attracted controversy. Winehouse was inspired by her issues for the hit song "Rehab". The song picked up Record and Song of the Year Grammy Awards. Her 2nd album, 'Back To Black' explored the 60s girl group and soul style. Mark Ronson's adept production raised the bar. "Rehab" reached the Top 10 in America and Britain. The parent album topped the UK Chart and peaked at #2 Stateside.
Mental health and drug use plagued Winehouse despite all the exaltation. Her marriage ended in 2009. She was arrested for various offences. Many live appearances turned into train wrecks.
Winehouse collaborated with Quincy Jones in 2010. The following year, she recorded "Body And Soul" as a duet with Tony Bennett. On July 23 that year, she was discovered dead in her home as a result of excessive drinking.
A new album of leftover tracks entitled 'Lioness: Hidden Treasures' was issued after her tragic death. It reached #1 in Britain. In 2015, the documentary 'Amy' was released. The film featured archival footage and interviews with those associated with Winehouse. Despite her troubles, the blue-eyed soul singer shone brightly for too brief a time.
