1 RIVER DEEP – MOUNTAIN HIGH (credited to Ike & Tina Turner) 1966 Today, Phil Spector is remembered as a weird murderer, but in the 1960s, he was an acclaimed producer. He created the Wall Of Sound which spawned hits such as “Be My Baby”, “He’s A Rebel”, “Then He Kissed Me”, “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’”, Da Doo Ron Ron” and “Unchained Melody”. He later produced The Beatles’ ‘Let It Be’ album as well as some of the solo releases from John Lennon and George Harrison, including: “Imagine”, “My Sweet Lord”, “Happy X’mas (War Is Over)” and ‘The Concert For Bangladesh’ charity album. Spector was a hard taskmaster, demanding countless takes from Tina as she recorded “River Deep – Mountain High”. The song was written by him with Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich. Spector banned Ike from the session, even though he is credited on the single. The end result was one of rock music’s most thrilling recordings. Tina’s vocal is in full force as it soars above the music and background vocals. Others have tried to imitate Turner’s performance, but no one has ever matched its unbridled energy.  It's inexplicable that the single only reached #88 on the American chart, a fact that so upset Spector that he ceased working for some years. The song did peak at #3 in Britain and charted well in Europe and Australia. Since 1966, the recording has been recognized as one of the best rock songs.

2 NUTBUSH CITY LIMITS with Ike Turner 1973 It is fitting that “Nutbush City Limits” was the last US Top 40 hit during Tina’s marriage to Ike Turner. Her ex-husband had previously been the principal songwriter, and a talented one at that, playing a seminal role in the foundation of rock ‘n’ roll. On “Nutbush City Limits”, Tina leaves no doubt that she is in control. She penned the song herself, paying tribute to the town in Tennessee where she was raised by her grandparents. Ike produced the track. It’s sweaty, gritty and soaked in an irresistible fusion of funk, R&B and rock. The single reached #22 in America and peaked at #4 in the UK. It was the title track from the duo’s 1973 album release.    Tina re-recorded the hit in the 1990s and various remixes emerged that decade. One appeared on her 1991 compilation album 'Simply The Best'. These new dance versioons have charted in Britain, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

3 THE BEST 1989 Today, it seems incredible that “The Best” was not written especially for Tina Turner. The song, penned by Mike Chapman and Holly Knight, was originally recorded by Bonnie Tyler in 1988. That version made the Top 30 in some European countries and barely dented the UK chart. One year later, Tina covered it. She attacked it with such precision and confidence that she totally owned the song. Her remake was produced by Tina and Dan Hartman and was included on her ‘Foreign Affair’ album. The single went Top 5 in Britain, Europe, Canada and Australia. In the US, the disc peaked at #15. It soon became one of- if not the ultimnate- signature song for Tina.
