TOP 1200 CHOICE TRACKS
#1169 ROCKMAKER Toto
David Paich, keyboardist and vocalist for the group Toto, wrote this track from the group's 1978 self-titled debut album. Often criticized for the very reason they proved popular: Toto's craftsmanship was masterful and precise; the result of years working as session musicians.

#1170 ME AND MRS JONES Billy Paul
One of the greatest examples of the lush and gorgeous Philly Sound that thrived in the early 70s, was Billy Paul's rendition of the song penned by Kenny Gamble, Cary Gilbert and Leon Huff. Released in 1972, it deals with marital infidelity with a strong sense of maturity and guilt. At the time of this recording, the vocalist was about to turn 38 and this was to be his first national hit in the USA, where it went on to reach #1.

#1171 TELEPHONE LINE Electric Light Orchestra
1976 saw E.L.O. release their best album thus far: 'A New World Record'. All of that album's tracks were written by lead vocalist Jeff Lynne. On paper, this song ought to have been a low point in their repertoire; excessive and cheesy. But, full credit to Lynne for making "Telephone Line" a highlight among the group's output. His vocals, the falsettos in the chorus and the lush arrangements all come together seamlessly, complemented by the re-creation of a call going down the phone line.

#1172 SMOOTH CRIMINAL Michael Jackson
Taking on his most objectionable musical persona, Jackson offered up "Smooth Criminal" in 1987; one of the singles lifted off his 'Bad' album. He wrote the song himself, co-producing it with Quincy Jones. Musically, it is an engaging song, from its tense intro to its integral beat which meshes so effectively with his vocal.

Often overlooked due to the higher profile tracks "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" and "Time After Time", this underrated track was lifted as a later single from Lauper's 1983 'She's So Unusual' album. This was one of the 2 songs Jules Shear penned for her breakthrough solo LP.

Blondie dared to create their own take on a variety of styles with various tracks: disco, punk, rap and, on "The Tide is High", soca (soul calypso) - Trinidad's style of reggae. #1181 WHO'S LOVIN' YOU Jackson 5
This Smokey Robinson composition had been covered by his group the Miracles as well as other label mates, but the best interpretation -by far- was by the Jackson 5. Released on the flip side of their amazing first chart-topping single "I Want You Back", it has attracted increased admiration over the decades. The siblings' vocals are befitting its lyrics. But it is Michael who truly shines on this track. With a purity in his voice, he pours emotion and heartache into every syllable, with the understanding and empathy of an adult. Truly magical.

#1182 STOP, LOOK, LISTEN (TO YOUR HEART) Diana Ross & Marvin Gaye
In 1973, Motown released a duet album by two of its major stars in that decade. The former Supreme was now enjoying a solo career and was teamed with Gaye just as he was changing attitudes towards albums and R&B not only at Motown, but everywhere. This is a track from that project. Written by Thom Bell with Linda Creed for the Stylistics, the 2 superstars on this recorded their parts separately. This version surpasses the original.
