WHAT IS LIFE

George Harrison

As a songwriter, George Harrison was restricted while a member of The Beatles. With contributions from John Lennon and Paul McCartney, his songs struggled for inclusion on the group's albums despite their quality. When the band broke up, he had a stockpile of songs on hand for his solo debut. Harrison unleashed a double album entitled 'All Things Must Pass' in late 1970. He co-produced the album with Spector. Among its gems was "What Is Life", the second single lifted off this LP and the follow-up to "My Sweet Lord". It reached the Top 10 in America, parts of Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Motown was considering dropping Stevie Wonder from its roster in 1965. That was when the young artist played the skeleton of an idea he had for a song. His concept was developed into the timeless "Uptight (Everything's Alright)".

UNCHAINED MELODY

The Righteous Brothers

Most people are familiar with "Unchained Melody" because of its use in the 1990 film 'Ghost'. When it was originally released in 1965 it was the B-side for the single "Hung On You". The song had actually been written for use in a 1955 film entitled 'Unchained'. Numerous versions have been recorded since. The Righteous Brothers' remake charted in 1965, climbing to #14 in the UK and #4 in America. It also made the Top 10 in Europe, Canada and New Zealand. Its use during a pivotal scene in 'Ghost' decades later resulted in a revival of the Spector-produced track. The disc topped the British, Australian and New Zealand's charts, as well as reaching #13 in the US and making the Top 10 in Canada and Europe.

Spector produced "Then He Kissed Me", a hit he co-wrote with Ellie Greenwich and Jeff Barry. In 1963, the disc peaked at #2 in the UK and #6 on the American Top 40. On lead vocals was new recruit Dolores "La La" Brooks.
