“Only Teardrops” was certainly catchy, but the Danes have been represented by stronger material. In the final, Azerbaijan gathered 12 points from more countries than Denmark (10) but the upbeat song accumulated the higher overall total.

AMAR PELOS DOIS
Salvador Sobral
PORTUGAL - 2017
24 POINTS FROM: France; Iceland; Lithuania; Netherlands; Israel; Spain & Switzerland.
Salvador Sobral - Amar pelos dois.jpg
Portugal’s wait for Eurovision victory had endured decades of disappointing results. Salvador Sobral’s entry finally saw a Portuguese entry emerge triumphant. This was easily Portugal’s finest entry ever. It collected 12 points from both the national juries and public tele-voting in 7 countries. The classy song suffered somewhat from Sobral’s distracting delivery. His arrogant put-down of fellow competitors was also a turn-off. In the end, it was refreshing to see ESC at a new location: the picturesque city of Lisbon.

SHOULD-A BEEN HITS

APACHE
Sugarhill Gang
1981
"Apache" had been an instrumental hit for the group The Shadows in the 1960's. The track received a rap makeover when covered by The Sugarhill Gang. Although now regarded as a seminal hip hop classic, the single failed to crack the American or UK Top 40.

SAVED  BY THE BELL
Robin Gibb
1969 UK #2
Trivia: Tension was brewing within The Bee Gees in the late 1960s, most particularly between brothers Barry and Robin Gibb. Much of the strained relations was due to which brother was getting the key lead vocal parts. In the end, Robin decided to quit the trio. He went solo, releasing 'Robin's Reign' in 1970, which was preceded by the single "Saved By The Bell". The track was written and produced by Robin. It was well received but sales failed to match the chart highs enjoyed by The Bee Gees. By the end of 1970, Robin had rejoined Barry and Maurice Gibb in the trio.
