Trivia: "It Might As Well Rain Until September" was a chart hit for Carole King. She co-wrote the song with her partner Gerry Goffin. Together, they created numerous hits recorded by acts as diverse as The Monkees, Little Eva, Bobby Vee, The Drifters and Herman's Hermits. King's profile grew as a result of her compositions until she became a household name as a recording artist in 1971 with the release of her 'Tapestry' album.

In 1981, Australian younger music fans were introduced to the sound of swing via the successful single "Bad Habits". Singer/ songwriter Billy Field enjoyed success on the domestic charts with a brief run of discs. "Bad Habits" peaked at #4 in Australia. The parent album reached the top.

Trivia: "On Bended Knee" by Boyz II Men knocked "I'll Make Love To You" off the top perch on the Billboard Hot 100. Both songs were by the Motown boy band. The predecessor had enjoyed a staggering 14- week reign at #1 in America. Its replacement kept Boyz II Men at the top for a further 6 weeks!

Janis Ian had been absent from the upper rungs of the Top 40 for years, when "Fly Too High" re-energized her career. The single was featured on the American singer / songwriter's album 'Night Rains'. One of the follow-up singles from the same LP was "The Other Side Of The Sun", a gentle ballad that failed to dent the charts.

Trivia: Nu Shooz is a duo comprised of married couple guitarist John Smith and vocalist/ percussionist Valerie Day. A 1986 remix of the song became the most successful release from the dance/ funk act, although follow-up single "Point Of No Return" did fare well in some markets.

These songs are well known but you may not know about the earlier attempts to score a hit record with prior versions of the same song.
One Step Beyond

"One Step Beyond" was the title track from the debut album by British group Madness. Released as a single in 1979, the disc became the band's first UK Top 10 hit and broke the group internationally. 
In 1964, the mostly instrumental original "One Step Beyond" was issued as the B-side of "Al Capone", a single from Jamaican ska musician Prince Buster. That disc did not chart in Britain until 3 years later, when the single reached the Top 20.
