After The Beatles split, Paul McCartney released solo albums before forming the group Wings. "Listen To What The Man Said" was lifted as a single from his 4th album as a member of the new band: 'Venus And Mars'. The song was written and produced by McCartney.

1974

Eurovision Sparks A Revolution!

ABBA may have won the battle on the leaderboard in 1974 with the Swedish entry “Waterloo” in Brighton, England, but another of that year’s Eurovision songs triggered a revolution!

The Portuguese entry “E Depois Do Adeus” (And After Goodbye) was sung by Paulo de Carvalho. Its first broadcast on national radio back home was a signal to troops aiming to overthrow the government. This so-called ‘Carnation Revolution’ succeeded in ousting fascism in Portugal and ending the ‘Estado Novo’ (Second Republic).

The Marvelettes

Trivia:

Motown girl group The Marvelettes recorded the original version of "Please Mr. Postman". The song was created around some lyrics penned by group member Georgia Dobbins and music composed by William Garrett who lived in her area. Performed in their audition, Motown signed the females. The song concept was presented to staffers Brian Holland, Roger Bateman and Freddie Gorman to develop it further. The latter actually was still working as a postman at the time! Their combined efforts paid off: the disc became the record label's first #1 single on the US chart.

1973

Eurovision Goes Beyond Europe

Some Eurovision purists firmly hold the opinion that the ESC ought to be restricted only to countries within Europe. Depending on how strictly you want to apply that criteria, some nations such as the United Kingdom (now that Brexit is a reality) might no longer be eligible.

In actual fact, eligibility requires being a member of the European Broadcasting Union. This allowed Israel to be welcomed into the Eurovision family in 1973. Illanit became the first performer to sing the Israeli entry. 

The ESC expanded its borders again 4 years later, when Tunisia was due to debut. Scheduled to perform 4^th on the night, the African nation withdrew and has never submitted a bid since then. Morocco became the first (and so far only) African country to compete on the Eurovision stage in 1980. After finishing in 18^th place in a field of 19 participants, Morocco has chosen not to return to the Contest.

Israel therefore, has defied security risks and threats to maintain its presence at Eurovision. The country has won the Contest no less than 4 times, with the most recent triumph taking place in 2018 when Netta won with “Toy”. The ESC was held in Israel for the 3rd time in 2019.

Eurovision cast its net even further in 2015, welcoming a country a considerable distance away from Europe. This addition to the ESC caused yet another upset which will be covered later.

“You Got It” revived Roy Orbison’s chart fortunes, becoming his first Top 10 hit since the 1960s.The song was written by The Big O with Jeff Lynne (who also produced it) and Tom Petty.

From its inaugural year, the Eurovision Song Contest has had more than its fair share of controversial moments. This is a special look back on 30 significant upsets in chronological order.

1969

Four winners!?!

After all the controversy surrounding the bewildering Spanish victory in 1968, the Eurovision Song Contest had an even bigger upset in the following year. Madrid was the host city and 16 countries participated.

When the results were announced, it became clear that 4 countries had finished with the highest score: 18 points. With no rules in place to resolve a tie, it was decided to declare all 4 nations the winner!

The winning songs that year were: “Un Jour, Un Enfant” (Frida Boccara, France) performed in French, “Boom Bang-A-Bang” (Lulu, United Kingdom) sung in English, “Vivo Cantando” (Salomé, Spain) in Spanish and the Dutch song “De Troubadour” (Lenny Kuhr, Netherlands).

Rules were swiftly created in the event of another tie. In 1970, the number of participating countries dropped to 12, no doubt in response to the unsatisfactory conclusion of the 1969 Contest. Lots were drawn to determine which country should host the 1970 event out of the 4 victorious nations. The Netherlands won the draw and Amsterdam became the next ESC host city.
