Eurovision Sparks A Revolution!
Street art in Lisbon depicting the Carnation RevolutionABBA may have won the battle on the leaderboard in 1974 with the Swedish entry “Waterloo” in Brighton, England, but another of that year’s Eurovision songs triggered a revolution!
Image result for caernation revolutionThe Portuguese entry “E Depois Do Adeus” (And After Goodbye) was sung by Paulo de Carvalho. Its first broadcast on national radio back home was a signal to troops aiming to overthrow the government. This so-called ‘Carnation Revolution’ succeeded in ousting fascism in Portugal and ending the ‘Estado Novo’ (Second Republic).
