There was major change during the year 2013. Following the resignation of Pope Benedict, an Argentinian cardinal is elected as the new pontiff, taking the name Pope Francis. Xi Jingping became the new Chinese President. Civil unrest erupted in Egypt. Bombs exploded near the finish line of the Boston Marathon. South African athlete Oscar Pistorius was charged with murdering his girlfriend. Syria was accused of using chemical weapons. Edward Snowden leaked secret information. US President Obama was sworn in for a second term. Andy Murray won Wimbledon.

We mourned the loss of Nelson Mandela, Peter O’Toole, Paul Walker, James Gandolfini, Cory Monteith and Lou Reed while crowds flocked to see films like: ‘Gravity’, ‘Frozen’ and ‘Iron Man 3’ and TV audiences watched “House Of Cards”, “Wentworth” and “Orange Is The New Black”.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis delivered a rare hip hop plea for same sex marriage. Its message spread to a new audience and no doubt, changed minds. The single was a hit around the globe and reached #1 in Australia and New Zealand.

GET LUCKY

Daft Punk

ftg. Pharrell Williams & Nile Rodgers

 

French duo Daft Punk scored its biggest hit with “Get Lucky”. The single peaked at #2 in the US and topped the charts in Britain, Europe and Australia. Joining the pair was Pharrell Williams on vocals and Nile Rodgers (from Chic) injecting the funk on guitar.

BLURRED LINES

Robin Thicke

ftg. T.I. & Pharrell Williams

 

Thicke’s brand of blue-eyed soul proved popular in 2013, mostly due to the appeal of this track. The single reached #1 in America, the UK, Europe, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Israel and South Africa. He was later sued by Marvin Gaye’s estate who successfully argued that “Blurred Lines” ripped off his “Got To Give It Up”.

DANCE YOUR PAIN AWAY

Agnetha Fältskog

 

Most of ABBA’s most moving ballads featured Agnetha Fältskog on lead vocals. The Swedish vocalist’s solo album ‘A’ consisted of many slow numbers. “Dance Your Pain Away” was the disc’s fast-paced dance track.

Pharrell Williams

 

This global smash topped charts in the U.S.A., Britain, Europe, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Israel and South Africa. The song was featured in the 2013 film ‘Despicable Me 2’.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis

‘The Heist’ was the breakthrough album for Macklemore. With DJ / producer Ryan Lewis, the duo took hip hop into a new direction. This track was an upbeat dance song that was a #1 hit in America and Australia.

Hozier

 

The Irish singer/ songwriter delivered a powerful song with this hit single. Its accompanying music video attacked Russia’s intolerance of gay rights.

I DREAMED A DREAM

Anne Hathaway

 

The film version of the stage musical “Les Miserables” premiered in late 2012. Among its cast members performing on the soundtrack were Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway. The latter sang the showstopper in her role as Fantine for which she received an Academy Award in the Best Supporting Actress category.
