Caffè Lattè looks back on the

UK CHART

CHRISTMAS

No. 1s

The Christmas #1 is a hard-fought chart battle waged every year. It encompasses the week of December 15 - 21. As we await the announcement of this year’s winner, let’s retrace the songs that have accomplished the long-held tradition in the past since the inaugural chart back in 1952.That first #1 single was still on top at Christmastime.

During the 1960s, The Beatles were the biggest British musical export and this is reflected with the Fab Four achieving 4 X’mas #1s in 5 years; another chart record that the band broke.

In the 1970s, there were a few more Yuletide-themed at the top during the festive season. Including a remake of a previous X’mas #1 song.

The Eighties saw Cliff earn his second Christmas #1 and one of the all-time best-selling singles raise money for famine relief in two different versions.

Cliff did it again in the 1990s. Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” was re-issued after the passing of Freddie Mercury and was at #1 for another X’mas. The Spice Girls used girl power to earn 3 consecutive Christmas chart-topping singles.

In the new millennium, a third version of the Band Aid festive classic reached the top. As its first decade neared its end, “The X-Factor” was the most popular TV program on British TV. It had spawned 4 Christmas #1s (from 2005-2008) in-a-row. This sparked a campaign to prevent it achieving a fifth. Support was thrown behind the 1992 single “Killing In The Name Of”. The campaign was successful in achieving its aim when the re-released disc finally climbed to #1.

British online sensation Ladbaby posed a threat to the record books with 2 consecutive Christmas #1 songs in the last two years of the 2010s. More would follow.
