#119 ALL I NEED IS TIME Gladys Knight & The Pips
By 1973, Gladys Knight and The Pips were increasingly disenchanted with the ever more obvious pecking order in operation at their label. While Motown was busy grooming the now solo Diana Ross into its star, others were left feeling like a lesser priority. Amid this growing discontent, Knight and The Pips completed the 'All I Need Is Time' album for the record company.
Its title track was issued as a single that year. It was a song dealing with a protagonist coping with the end of her relationship. Brad Reneau wrote the ballad, as well as a 2nd track on the LP entitled "Oh! What A Love I Have Found". The writer also used the name Bud Reneau.
"All I Need Is Time" was produced by Joe Porter. The single reached #28 on the American R&B Chart. By year's end, the vocal group had switched labels to Buddah Records, where greater commercial success awaited Gladys Knight & The Pips.

In 1997, Janet Jackson enjoyed a global Top 10 hit and a US #1 with "Together Again", an upbeat song she co-wrote and produced with Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis and Rene Elizondo. The track, lifted off 'The Velvet Rope', was inspired by the death of 1 of her friends from AIDS.

Many love songs date swiftly or are just cheesy; others are timeless and remain spellbinding with every play. "Kissing You" by Des'ree is an example of the latter. The heart wrenching ballad starts basic, with voice and piano drawing the listener in, before strings reveal the glorious beauty of the song.
Des'ree co-wrote "Kissing You" for a pivotal scene in the 1996 film adaptation of 'William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet' with Tim Atack. The 2 co-produced the track with Nellee Hooper. It is sometimes listed as "I'm Kissing You". The song was also added to the British vocalist's 1998 album 'Supernatural'.
Released as a single, "Kissing You" only reached the lower rungs of the UK Top 100. On the other hand, in Australia, the gorgeous ballad peaked at #17 in 1997. Des'ree enjoyed greater success with the follow-up single "Life", which reached the Top 10 in both markets.
Despite the quality of "Kissing You", Des'ree failed to maintain its high standard in her subsequent releases. She returned to the charts around the world but none have since matched the undeniable soulful beauty of "Kissing You". Her most recent new album was 'Dream Soldier' in 2003.

Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel's treatment of an old English folk song became a beautiful new track, rich with vocal overdubs. It was featured on the duo's 1966 album 'Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme'.

#121 THAT OLE DEVIL CALLED LOVE Alison Moyet
Alison Moyet covered the Billie Holiday torch song "That Ole Devil Called Love" in 1985. The blue- eyed British chanteuse wraps her vocal skills around the standard and recorded its best contemporary interpretation.
The classic jazz song was written by Allan Roberts and Doris Fisher in 1944. The following year, Holiday released her version of "That Ole Devil..." as the B-side of the single "Lover Man (Oh, Where Can You Be?)". The disc peaked at #5 on the US R&B chart. Holiday passed away in 1959, a tragic victim of heroin addiction.
Moyet recorded her version of "That Ole Devil..." following the success of her debut solo album 'Alf'. The remake peaked at #2 in Britain and reached the top of the chart in New Zealand. Her gorgeous voice and the lush production made a new generation aware of the song.
Moyet continues to record, having released her most recent studio album in 2013. This set ended 6 years of no new music and was entitled 'The Minutes'. Later that year, she issued 'Minutes and Seconds Live'. Both were on her new label home: Cooking Vinyl.

The music he composed perfectly matched Bernie Taupin's beautifully crafted lyrics on this ode to screen legend Marilyn Monroe. The track was just 1 of the gems on the landmark album 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road', unleashed in 1973.
While never released as a single in the USA, it did peak at #11 in the UK and 8 in Ireland; as well as reaching #5 in Australia (as part of a double A-sided disc backed with "Bennie and the Jets"). The song was finally issued as a single in 1987 in a new version John recorded live with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in Sydney. This re-recording peaked at #6 and 5 in the US and UK respectively.
In 1997, its lyrics were changed for the funeral of Princess Diana. John performed the song live at Westminster Abbey. Annie Lennox wrote "Step By Step", recording the original version in 1992. Whitney Houston's version was used for 'The Preacher's Wife' film soundtrack 4 years later. Stephen Lipson produced. It charted around the globe.

While preparing to work with Diana Ross, Chic's Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards interviewed the former Supreme to get some song ideas. This was held at her home and the 2 songwriter/ producers asked Ross about her life. Rodgers explained that process to me in an interview: "so everything we write about are things that are about Diana or in her world but from our point of view as if we're journalists or ... film makers". Rodgers and Edwards noticed that Ross had a baby grand piano in her house. This inspired them to write "My Old Piano".
The song was included on the 1980 release 'Diana', 1 of Ross' most successful albums. It was the 3rd single lifted off the LP. The track made the Top 10 in parts of Europe and #5 in the United Kingdom. It also peaked at #25 in Australia. This was her final album of all-new material issued by Ross on Motown before she switched labels to RCA (Capitol) Records. By 1989, she was re-united with Motown once again.
