#122 CANDLE IN THE WIND Elton John
Elton John established himself as 1 of the greatest recording artists thanks to classic songs such as "Candle in the Wind". The music he composed perfectly matched Bernie Taupin's beautifully crafted lyrics on this ode to screen legend Marilyn Monroe. The track was just 1 of the gems on the landmark album 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road', unleashed in 1973.
While never released as a single in the USA, it did peak at #11 in the UK and 8 in Ireland; as well as reaching #5 in Australia (as part of a double A-sided disc backed with "Bennie and the Jets"). The song was finally issued as a single in 1987 in a new version John recorded live with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in Sydney. This re-recording peaked at #6 and 5 in the US and UK respectively.
In 1997, its lyrics were changed for the funeral of Princess Diana. John performed the song live at Westminster Abbey. Issued as a charity single under the title "Candle in the Wind 1997", the disc became 1 of the best selling singles of all-time. This new version reached #1 in the UK, USA, Europe, Australia, Canada, Japan and New Zealand.
This
is a list made up of the songs I enjoy the most, ranked in order of preference: the higher we go, the more I
cherish them. Some were released as singles, others as album tracks.
Some are obscure; others were worldwide hits or have
universal appeal.
They aren't always the most famous or popular, but simply a personal
choice. I have excluded songs from the last few years in order to get a
better idea of a song's lasting impression. I hope you find some new tracks to love, or re-discover some past favourites.
A
new song from the Top 200 is added each day, while another 2 are also
included from positions 1501-2000 daily. Check back here every 12 hours
for
an update of the 2000.
