From New York’s Broadway and London’s West End to stages across the globe, Caffè Lattè has compiled a list of 100 of the best songs from stage shows. These are all songs created specifically for the stage productions and not theatrical versions of movies or jukebox musicals (eg. “The Lion King”, “Saturday Night Fever” or “Mamma Mia!” and “Jersey Boys”). They’ve touched us or made us cry and some have had us up on our feet dancing in the aisles.

SUMMER NIGHTS

Grease

Few musical numbers can instantly put a smile on audience members’ faces like the catchy upbeat “Summer Nights”. The song is sung from a female and male perspective. Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta may have immortalized the number in the film version, but this song was a part of the theatrical productions that preceded the box office hit. Other songs such as "You're The One That I Want", "Grease" and "Hopelessly Devoted To You" were created for the screen adaptation (and are therefore ineligible for this list).

Trivia:

"Smooth" resuscitated Santana as a chart entity. It became the final US #1 of the 20th century. The music was composed by Itaal Shur, formerly of Groove Collective. Rob Thomas from the group Matchbox 20 came up with the lyrics. He initially imagined George Michael doing the vocal. Carlos Santana was not thrilled with the song, but Clive Davis predicted "Smooth" would be a hit. The single spent 12 weeks at #1 in America.

George Michael was born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou June 25, 1963 in London. He met and befriended Andrew Ridgeley while in high school. The two teens were determined to realize their musical ambitions. After a failed attempt with the group The Executive formed in 1979, the two became a duo named Wham! in 1981.

They signed a deal with Innervision which led to the release of debut album ‘Fantastic’ 2 years later. Four singles were issued off that LP and all of them cracked the UK Top 10. ‘Fantastic’ reached #1 in Britain and was followed by sophomore album ‘Make It Big’ in 1984.

Caffè Lattè presents a tribute to one of pop music’s greatest performers. In 2023, he would have celebrated his 60^th birthday. A Netflix special looks back on his days with Wham!. Here are his best songs ranked in order of impact & quality - as a soloist and with Andrew Ridgeley….

HELLO, DOLLY!

Hello, Dolly!

This Jerry Herman musical was based on a 1955 play entitled “The Matchmaker”. The title character is Dolly Levi. Carol Channing starred in the original Broadway cast in 1964. The production scooped up 10 Tonys, including Best Musical and Actress (for Channing). A 1969 film version starring Barbra Streisand won 3 Oscars.

Trivia:

The original plan for "Addicted To Love" was that its writer Robert Palmer would record it as a duet with Chaka Khan. She cut her vocal, but the pair's record labels could not reach agreement. Palmer erased Khan's contribution and the single was released as a solo track for him instead.
