THE TOP 100
#26 HIGH FLYING BIRD
ELTON JOHN
(1973)
Writers: Elton John & Bernie Taupin
Elton John experimented with his vocals while recording his 1973 album 'Don't Shoot Me, I'm Only The Piano Player'. He has explained that his approach in the studio when singing the track "High Flying Bird" for that LP saw him aim for a different sound. John claims his vocals on the cut sound reminiscent of Van Morrison.
Gus Dudgeon produced the successful album which contained the underrated track. It was recorded in the Chåteau d' Hérouville, just outside of Paris, France. The recording space is referred to as Strawberry Studios in the album's sleeve notes. This was John's 2nd album recorded there, following 'Honky Chåteau' the previous year. John returned to the same studio later that year to record his classic 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road' album.
