#7 AMOUREUSE
KIKI DEE
(1973)
Writers: Veronique Sanson & Gary Osborne
Most music fans would only know the name Kiki Dee because of her worldwide hit duet "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" recorded with Elton John. Others may even be familiar with her t1974 solo hit "I've Got The Music In Me". Her reading of the French song "Amoureuse" preceded these successful singles and reveals the depth of Dee's vocal talent.
The song "Amoureuse" started as a solo single recorded and penned by Veronique Sanson, a rising star in France during the early 1970s. She was married to Michel Berger, a popular French vocalist. After that marriage folded, she married Stephen Stills, who was a third of the famous trio Crosby, Stills & Nash. By now, "Amoureuse" had been issued as a single in its original French version.
Kiki Dee released an English adaptation of "Amoureuse" in 1973. While Gary Osborne's new lyrics changed the context of the original's verses, the chorus remained faithful to Sanson's words. Dee's single was issued by Rocket Records, a label founded by Elton John. Osborne would co-write songs with the piano player in the near future. These included the John hits "Little Jeannie" and "Part Time Love". Osborne would also co-write "Nobody Wins", another hit single for John.
"Amoureuse" featured various members of John's backing band. Dee Murray played bass and Davey Johnstone contributed electric guitar to the recording. The track was co-produced by John with Clive Franks. The touching and haunting orchestral arrangement was courtesy of John Barnam. The beautiful song was included on Dee's 'Loving & Free' album. The single went on to reach the Top 15 in both the UK and Australia in 1973.
Around the same time, a different interpretation of "Amoureuse" was released. Helen Reddy would record new lyrics put to Sanson's lovely melody. This new rendition was renamed "Emotion". While it only climbed to #22 Pop, it did top the AC chart in 1975.
Other versions of "Amoureuse" / "Emotion" have been recorded by the likes of Olivia Newton-John (in 1973), Shirley Bassey (1975) and a dance remake by Illusive featuring Amanda Abbs (1997). Dee's version was re-issued in 1984 in Britain. In 1993, she teamed up again on record with John on the duet "True Love".
