EUROVISION’S
100
MOST ESSENTIAL SONGS
(1958-2015)
Now that the dust has settled on another fabulous Eurovision
Song Contest, it’s time to look back on the most important and influential
songs that have competed over the last 60 years. All of the winning songs are
included, as well as other noteworthy entries from the most watched music
contest in the world.
ONLY TEARDROPS
EMMELIE DE FOREST
Denmark -2013
Eurovision literally crossed
a bridge when the Danes won in Malmo, Sweden. In 2013, 39 countries competed,
despite some regulars withdrawing. “Only Teardrops” was an early favourite and
romped to victory.
#89
GRANDE AMORE
IL VOLO
Italy -2015
Italy has been represented by
some interesting and varied acts since its return in 2011. “Grande Amore” was a
stupendous entry that finished in 3rd place and showed that a “big
5” country could perform well with a worthy song. This entry combined opera
with pop in an “iI Divo” style.
#88
NOUS LES AMOUREUX
JEAN-CLAUDE PASCAL
Luxembourg -1961
By 1961, there were 16
nations involved. Spain made its debut; today it is 1 of “The Big 5” that
annually pre-qualify for the Grand Final. “Nous Les Amoureux” translates as “we
who love each other”. It was another slow-paced winner but it did feature a
hint of jazz. It was sung in French by 1 of France’s well-known singer/ actors,
but he represented Luxembourg. The Grand Duchy scored its 1st of 5
wins with this entry.
#87
DIVINE
SEBASTIAN TELLIER
France -2008
France surprised ESC fans in
2008. For the 1st time, its entry was sung in English; presumably to
attract more votes. It was a catchy Beach Boys-type song but his stage
performance may have been somewhat puzzling- even for Eurovision!
#86
FLY ON THE WINGS OF LOVE
Denmark -2000
The Danes ensured Eurovision
remained in Scandinavia with a victory in the Swedish capital. Stockholm was
the host city as Sweden had won in the previous year. “Fly On The Wings Of Love”
achieved a resounding triumph.
