GEORGE MARTIN
[1926-2016]
Known as “the 5th Beatle”, George Martin was an
integral part of the group’s recorded output. His input was a key to the timeless quality of The Beatles' recordings such as "Yesterday", "Hey Jude", 'Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band' and "I Want To Hold Your Hand". He applied his vast musical
experience to complement the band’s song ideas. Martin forever left his mark on
The Beatles’ catalogue as producer of their albums (with a lesser role on ‘Let
It Be’),
During the 1960s, he also produced hits such as “You’ll Never
Walk Alone” (Gerry & The Pacemakers), “You’re My World” (Cilla Black) and
“Goldfinger” (Shirley Bassey).
Following the break up of The Beatles, Martin worked on songs by
former members Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney. For the latter, he produced
“Live And Let Die”, “Ebony And Ivory” (with Stevie Wonder) and “Say, Say, Say”
(with Michael Jackson).
Since 1970, Martin produced major hits for a diverse range of
artists including America (“Sister Golden Hair”), Little River Band (“The Night
Owls”) and Elton John (“Candle In The Wind 1997”). The latter, a tribute to
Princess Diana, remains one of the best selling records of all time. Martin was aged 90.
