HEAVY METAL
Heavy metal was spawned by the hard rock groups of the 1960s, including Cream, The Who and The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Led Zeppelin in particular, ushered in the sound of heavy metal, followed by the likes of Black Sabbath and Deep Purple. As the 1970s progressed, other acts emerged such as Alice Cooper, AC/DC, Kiss, Judas Priest and Motorhead. After the Seventies, the heavy metal genre was spearheaded by Iron Maiden, Metallica and Def Leppard.
Some acts enjoyed pop crossover success incorporating heavy metal into its sound. Heavy metal was a key ingredient in the sound of Queen's catalogue.
Despite attracting strong criticism and controversy- or perhaps because of it- heavy metal has outlasted many contemporaneous genres.
