Janis Ian penned "At Seventeen", a song that gives a description of what it is like to be an "ugly duckling". She outlines the way a teenager not considered attractive is treated and life from that perspective. It is raw and as brutal as peers can be at that time. Ian does not present a pretty picture of how it is for the girls that are ignored or rejected.
The song was released as a single in 1975 and was included on her 'Between The Lines' album. Ian's recording won her a Grammy Award.
