SAME LOVE
“…I might not be the same,
but that’s not
important.
No freedom 'til we’re equal,
damn right I support it…”
In 2012, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis gave the push for same-sex marriage an anthem that raised the bar for hip hop. Rapper Ben Haggerty (aka as Macklemore) crams the verses with the case for marriage equality. He counters the views held for centuries. As the track nears its end, he reminds us that if one minority is discriminated against, it affects every member of that society. In the end, he declares, love is love and it is all the same, regardless of gender.
The single, lifted off the duo's 'The Heist' album, topped the charts in Australia and New Zealand. It reached #11 in the USA and #6 in Britain.
The power of the song was made evident in late 2017. Macklemore attracted controversy when he performed the song live at a rugby grand final in Sydney, Australia. The country was involved in an unnecessary public survey. Despite the efforts of religious groups and homophobic conservative / government politicians, the Australian public voted in favour of same-sex marriage. It is now law.
As new songs are covered on this blog, a definitive version will be
added to a spotify playlist. Find it and the other Caffé Latté playlists at:
