As one of the “Big 5” countries, Germany automatically pre-qualifies for the ESC Grand Final. Anyone assuming that gives German entries an advantage need only see the scoreboards for 2015 and 2016. Germany finished last in both years. In the former Contest, “Black Smoke” shared that misfortune with Austria.

After Conchita Wurst’s triumph with “Rise Like A Phoenix” in 2014, Vienna was the Eurovision host city the following year. As a result, “I Am Yours” pre-qualified for the Grand Final. By evening’s end, Austria shared the same fate as Germany: nil points. Not even setting fire to the piano saved the ballad. It did deserve to finish higher.

Domenico Modugno

ITALY 1966

Poor Domenico Modugno, after being denied victory with the timeless “Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu (Volare)” in 1958, he returned to Eurovision the following year and fared even worse. While “Volare” finished in 3^rd place, “Piove (Ciao, Ciao Bambina)” achieved 6^th position. Modugno competed a third and final time in 1966. That year, only Italy and Monaco failed to attract any points and therefore shared last place.

SPAIN 1968

As far as nonsensical song titles go, “La, La, La” deserves the ESC crown. The Spanish entry includes no less than 138 “las”. Sure, it is catchy, but the chorus is the laziest ever. To make matters even worse, Massiel’s win prevented Cliff Richard’s superior UK entry “Congratulations” from its deserved place among Eurovision victors. He missed out by just one point.

Trivia:

American band Poco scored its biggest chart hit with "Crazy Love", featured on the album 'Legend'. The group first lost member Randy Meisner to The Eagles. Years later, another Poco member, Timothy B. Schmit, also left the band to become a permanent member of The Eagles.

DORS, MON AMOUR

FRANCE 1958

“Dors, Mon Amour” has earned a place among Eurovision’s worst winning songs ever mostly because of a renowned classic that was voted third that same year. Today, André Claveau’s French entry is forgotten by most, but the Italian song in 3^rd position has remained timeless. To this day, it is the only ESC song to reach #1 in America (where Eurovision means little). That song was “Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu (Volare)”, performed in Italian by Domenico Modugno. The single was the #1 disc of 1958 and won 2 Grammy Awards: Record and Song Of the Year. It is still the all-time most covered ESC song.

ROCK ‘N’ ROLL KIDS

IRELAND 1994

Ireland dominated Eurovision during the 1990s, achieving win after win. In hindsight, most of their victorious entries make little sense today. In 1994, it truly seemed like Ireland did not want to win again, following 2 consecutive triumphs. The host country was represented by the boring and ironically entitled ballad “Rock ‘n’ Roll Kids”. Performed by a duo that looked nothing like kids nor rock ‘n’ rollers, they secured a third Irish win in-a-row, a feat no other country has ever achieved.
