CAFFE` LATTE` TOP 2000 TRACKS
THE TOP 100
#86 THE GREATEST DISCOVERY
ELTON JOHN
(1970)
Writers: Bernie Taupin & Elton John
Elton John broke through in 1970 with his self-titled album. Its success was largely due to the hit single "Your Song", but the LP contained other beautifully written tracks, including "The Greatest Discovery". The ballad is tenderly sung by John, who composed music that matches the gentle lyrics from his long-time songwriting collaborator Bernie Taupin.
Paul Buckmaster handled the string arrangement on "The Greatest Discovery". Gus Dudgeon produced the track, which deals with the wide-eyed curiosity, excitement and wonder of a child amid the arrival of a newborn sibling.
A demo version of the track was included on the Deluxe Edition re-release of 'Elton John' in 2008. Many new fans were introduced to the obscure track in 1987 through John's in-concert album, 'Live Across Australia', capturing him on stage in Sydney, Australia accompanied by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
This is a list made up of the songs I enjoy the most, ranked in order of preference: the higher we go, the more I cherish them. Some were released as singles, others as album tracks. Some are obscure; others were worldwide hits or have universal appeal. They aren't always the most famous or popular, but simply a personal choice. I have excluded songs from the last few years in order to get a better idea of a song's lasting impression. I hope you find some new tracks to love, or re-discover some past favourites.
A new song from the remaining Top 100 is added each weekday, while another 2 are also included from positions 1501-2000 daily. Check back here every 12 hours for an update of the 2000.
