BEFORE IT WAS A HIT IX: Midnight Train To Georgia. Continues tomorrow.
BEFORE IT WAS A HIT SONG
These songs are well known but you may not know about the earlier attempts to score a hit record with prior versions of the same song.

Midnight Train To Georgia
Gladys Knight & The Pips turned Jim Weatherly's composition "Midnight Train To Georgia" into a soul staple. The songwriter recorded the original version and the train's destination was initially Houston.
When Cissy Houston was set to record a remake, it was thought a change was needed. This was to avoid Houston singing about a train headed for a city with the same name as her. Whitney Houston's mother issued her interpretation in 1973.
That same year, Gladys Knight & The Pips (who had previously recorded other songs penned by Weatherly) covered the song and it finally attracted a large audience. The vocal group scored its first and only US #1 with the song that remains one of the most cherished R&B classics. It also earned them a Grammy Award.
