BEFORE IT WAS A HIT VIII: Mickey. Continues tomorrow.
BEFORE IT WAS A HIT SONG
These songs are well known but you may not know about the earlier attempts to score a hit record with prior versions of the same song.

Mickey
Before Toni Basil topped the American, Canadian and Australian charts (& reached #2 in Britain) with her hit "Mickey", the song had gone through some changes. Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn wrote the song. Its original title was "Kitty" and was about a girl. That first version was recorded by British group Racey and wound up on the band's album 'Smash And Grab' in 1979. On that track, the track sat alongside the #1s "Some Girls" and "Lay Your Love On Me".
Basil changed the gender and title of the song to "Mickey". In 1982, the single became her only Top 40 hit. It remains one of the best known songs by a one hit wonder.
