In 1977, some of Los Angeles' most in-demand session musicians formed a group of their own. The founding members of Toto had written/ played on hits for George Benson, Boz Scaggs and (later) Michael Jackson. 

The band's self-titled debut album was issued in 1978. It made the US Top 10 and peaked at #2 in Australia. First single "Hold The Line" reached #5 in America. Other key tracks that attracted radio play were "Georgy Porgy" and "Rockmaker".

 'Toto' was followed by 'Hydra' in 1979. It contained the lovely ballad "99" but proved unable to match the success of its predecessor. Third LP 'Turn Back' fared even worse upon release in 1981. 

In 1982, the group came back stronger than ever with 'Toto IV'. This new album included the US #1 "Africa" and the #2 hit "Rosanna". The ballad "I Won't Hold You Back" reached the Top 10. Toto capped this golden period with a swag of Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year and Record of the Year (for "Rosanna").

David Hungate left the band 2 years later. In 1988, Steve Porcaro quit. In 1992, his brother and drummer Jeff Porcaro died of a heart attack. More line-up changes plagued the band before Steve Lukather disbanded Toto in 2008. He and David Paich were the only founding members when the group re-united in 2010. 'Toto XIV' became the band's most recent album release in 2015.
