THE BIGGEST CONTROVERSIES
Of the
EUROVISION SONG CONTEST
(1956 - 2019)
From its inaugural year, the Eurovision Song Contest has had more than its fair share of controversial moments. This is a special look back on 30 significant upsets in chronological order.

2006
“Oh Lordi!”.
Various countries arrived at the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest as hot favourites, including: Sweden, Russia, Germany and host country Greece. The eventual winning entry shocked many viewers.
That year, Finland was represented by the group Lordi. The country had never won at Eurovision, but in 2006 its song “Hard Rock Hallelujah” accumulated more points than any previous ESC song: a total of 292. Russia finished as the runner-up with 248.
Lordi was a hard rock/ heavy metal group. They took to the Eurovision stage wearing masks and incorporating pyrotechnics in their performance. The song was nothing like the typical Eurovision song.
