FOR ONCE IN MY ,LIFE
1968
“For Once In My Life” was a song that had been recorded by a variety of artists, most notably Tony Bennett in 1967. Stevie’s remake was more upbeat and exciting, but Motown failed to envisage it becoming a hit single and refused to release it. Finally, in 1968, the label relented and this became the definitive interpretation, peaking at #2 and #3 in America and Britain respectively. An album of the same name from Stevie followed in late 1968. The title track earned Stevie a Grammy nomination, losing to Otis Redding’s posthumous classic “(Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay”.
