THE 100 MOST ESSENTIAL SONGS BY
STEVIE WONDER
15
HIGHER GROUND
1973
Released as a single in July, “Higher Ground”
preceded the issue of parent album ‘Innervisions’ which followed in August. Both discs were making a significant impact on the respective charts when
Stevie almost died in a vehicle on his way to a concert. He suffered a broken skull and contusion of the brain when
a log on a truck struck his head. Stevie was in a coma for a few days. His aide
Ira Tucker sang this song to the unconscious musician. Fortunately, Stevie
recovered. As a result of the collision, he no longer has the sense of smell.
The single peaked at #4 Pop and topped the Soul Chart.
