WHERE DID OUR LOVE GO
The Supremes
[1964] Soul 2 / Pop 2
Brian Holland; Lamont Dozier; Eddie Holland
The dominance of American artists on the charts was interrupted abruptly by the emergence of The Beatles in 1964. In the U.S., local talent was suddenly steamrolled by the British Invasion. This effectively shut American acts out of the top spot with few rare exceptions. Motown was one label that managed to thrive during this period. The group that finished the decade second only to The Beatles in terms of #1 Pop singles was The Supremes. Beginning in 1964 with “Where Did Our Love Go”, the girl group amassed a dozen chart-topping discs. After being rejected by other Motown groups, the song was presented to The Supremes. The group had released a series of flops. Although Diana, Flo and Mary were unimpressed with it, they were in no position to also refuse to record it. The single’s success changed the girl group’s fortunes, turning the ‘no-hit Supremes’ into Motown’s top priority act.
