David Ruffin’s first lead vocal on a Temptations single was this Motown signature composition. Written and produced by Smokey and (fellow member of The Miracles) White, its success shifted focus onto Ruffin and away from other group members Paul Williams and Eddie Kendricks. The disc became the first single to reach the top of the Pop Chart. Its timeless quality is a further testament to the songwriting talent of Robinson.
