[1965] Soul 9 / Pop 3

Brian Holland; Lamont Dozier; Eddie Holland

The Four Tops formed in Detroit in 1953. Its line-up remained unchanged. “Baby I Need Your Loving” was the group’s chart debut hit, reaching #4 Soul and 11 Pop in 1964. “I Can’t Help Myself” was its first #1, lifted off its sophomore album. While on Motown, the group enjoyed a series of other hits, including: “It’s The Same Old Song”, “Standing In The Shadows Of Love”, “Bernadette”, “7 Rooms Of Gloom” and “Something About You”- all written by the crack Holland/Dozier/ Holland team. The Four Tops quit Motown for Dunhill/ ABC in the early 1970s. On the new label, the group achieved one more #1: “When She Was My Girl”.
