CAFFE` LATTE` TOP 2000 TRACKS
THE TOP 100
#60 YOU MAKE LOVING FUN
FLEETWOOD MAC
(1977)
Writers: Christine McVie
The disintegration of the members of Fleetwood Mac's relationships resulted in the group's finest work; the phenomenally successful 'Rumours' album in 1977. "You Make Loving Fun" was inspired by pianist Christine McVie's affair with the band's lighting director Curry Grant. She would later move out of her marital home (where she had resided with husband and bandmate John McVie). With her new abode, Curry moved in. By the time the group was recording 'Tusk' in 1979, McVie had become involved with The Beach Boys' drummer, Dennis Wilson.
The West Coast feel and jubilant harmonies on "You Make Loving Fun" ensured its appeal. It was the most cheerful song (arguably the only one) on 'Rumours'. Released as a single in 1977, "You Make Loving Fun" peaked at #9 in America (where it was the 4th and final track lifted off the album to reach the Top 10) and #7 in Canada.
In 1987, Lindsey Buckingham quit Fleetwood Mac. He had been the band's unofficial leader for over 10 years. Billy Burnette and Rick Vito were enlisted as replacements. 1990's 'Behind The Mask' attracted disappointing sales. Stevie Nicks and McVie then announced they would no longer go on the road but would continue recording with Fleetwood Mac. Vito departed the following year.
A one-off re-union of the 'Rumours' line-up took place for President Bill Clinton's inauguration (he had used the band's "Don't Stop" for his campaign) in 1993. By year's end, Nicks and McVie had officially left the group. In 1995, the 'Time' album fared poorly.
Again, the "hit" line-up teamed up for live shows, captured on 'The Dance' in 1997. Most of that year was spent on the road, but in 1998, McVie quit again. 2003 saw a new album emerge; with Buckingham and Nicks on board and this was well received. 'Say You Will' was the 1st group album to feature the 2 members for 16 years. In 2013, McVie joined the group on stage in London. The following year, she announced that she was back in Fleetwood Mac following a 16-year absence. The group is currently touring with the same line-up as on "You Making Loving Fun". The live dates announced thus far will see the group playing in North America and Great Britain in the 1st half of 2015. There is talk of a forthcoming new album.
This is a list made up of the songs I enjoy the most, ranked in order of preference: the higher we go, the more I cherish them. Some were released as singles, others as album tracks. Some are obscure; others were worldwide hits or have universal appeal. They aren't always the most famous or popular, but simply a personal choice. I have excluded songs from the last few years in order to get a better idea of a song's lasting impression. I hope you find some new tracks to love, or re-discover some past favourites.
A new song from the remaining Top 100 is added each weekday, while another 2 are also included from positions 1501-2000 daily. Check back here every 12 hours for an update of the 2000.
