CAFFE` LATTE` TOP 2000 TRACKS
THE TOP 100
#71 THE RHYTHM OF LIFE
DIANA ROSS AND THE SUPREMES & THE TEMPTATIONS
(1969)
Writers:  Cy Coleman & Dorothy Fields
After the success of the 1968 TV special "TCB", Motown's 2 biggest groups -The Supremes and The Temptations- re-united for a follow-up. Entitled "G.I.T. On Broadway", it premiered in the USA on November 12, 1969. The G.I.T. abbreviation in the show's title is an acronym for 'Getting It Together' in the same way TCB was short for 'Taking Care of Business'. The TV soundtrack album's title was simply 'On Broadway'. As the LP title suggests, most of its content consisted of Broadway show tunes, "The Rhythm Of Life" being 1 of them.
The song featured both groups sharing vocals. "The Rhythm Of Life" was from the 1960s musical "Sweet Charity". Along with that track, other familiar songs from the show include "Where Am I Going", "Big Spender" and "If My Friends Could See Me Now".
"Sweet Charity" opened on Broadway in January 1966. A year later, the musical premiered in Sydney, Australia. The production moved to Melbourne 4 months later. The show was popular enough to send "The Rhythm Of Life" to #5 on the Australian chart. This was to be the sole major market for the version by The Supremes and the Temptations as a single.
Diana Ross quit the girl group a few weeks after the TV show aired. Jean Terrell was brought in as her replacement, leaving Mary Wilson the only remaining founding member in The Supremes. Ross went on to a lucrative long-term solo career.
This is a list made up of the songs I enjoy the most, ranked in order of preference: the higher we go, the more I cherish them. Some were released as singles, others as album tracks. Some are obscure; others were worldwide hits or have universal appeal. They aren't always the most famous or popular, but simply a personal choice. I have excluded songs from the last few years in order to get a better idea of a song's lasting impression. I hope you find some new tracks to love, or re-discover some past favourites.
A new song from the remaining Top 100 is added each weekday, while another 2 are also included from positions 1501-2000 daily. Check back here every 12 hours for an update of the 2000.
