CAFFE` LATTE` TOP 2000 TRACKS
THE TOP 100
#37 MAS QUE NADA
SERGIO MENDES
featuring THE BLACK EYED PEAS
(2006)
Writer: Jorge Ben
Sergio Mendes first recorded a version of  "Mas Que Nada" in 1966.  Fellow Brazilian musician Jorge Ben wrote the song while in his early 20s. Mendes' interpretation was included on the album 'Herb Alpert Presents Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66'. Back then, the track was issued as a single and reached #47 Pop & 4 AC in the US. Lani Hall sang lead vocals on this recording. She was married for a time to Herb Alpert, who co-founded A&M Records, the label which included Mendes & Brasil '66 on its roster.
In 1989, Mendes re-recorded "Mas Que Nada" with a modern electronic approach to the Brazilian classic for his 'Azara' album. He also updated his backing band, with outfits named Brasil '99 and, later, Brasil 2000.
2005 saw him revisit "Mas Que Nada" again. This time, the new remake heavily featured the influence of will.i.am from The Black Eyed Peas. The cover version was included on Mendes' 2006 album 'Timeless', on which the legendary artist also collaborated with Stevie Wonder, Jill Scott, John Legend, Justin Timberlake and India.Arie.
This new take on "Mas Que Nada" was a joint single with The Black Eyed Peas. Mendes handled the keyboards and was joined on vocal duties by Gracinha Leporace, Debi Nova, Dante Santiago and will.i.am. The latter also took care of drum programming and bass guitar on the track. Most of the recording took place in Sao Paulo, Brazil while the  overdubs were completed in California. The 2006 single release reached #1 in Brazil, Hungary and the Netherlands. It peaked at #6 in the UK, as well as making the Top 10 in a variety of European countries.
This is a list made up of the songs I enjoy the most, ranked in order of preference: the higher we go, the more I cherish them. Some were released as singles, others as album tracks. Some are obscure; others were worldwide hits or have universal appeal. They aren't always the most famous or popular, but simply a personal choice. I have excluded songs from the last few years in order to get a better idea of a song's lasting impression. I hope you find some new tracks to love, or re-discover some past favourites.
Each weekday, a new song from the remaining Top 100 is added, while another 2 are also included from positions 1501-2000. Check back here  for an update of the 2000.
