CAFFE` LATTE` TOP 2000 TRACKS
THE TOP 100
#44 LOVE THEME FROM 'A STAR IS BORN' (EVERGREEN)
BARBRA STREISAND
(1976)
Writers: Barbra Streisand & Paul Williams

Wanting to appear convincing in her portrayal of singer / songwriter Esther Hoffman in the film 'A Star Is Born', Barbra Streisand sought tutoring on the guitar from a lyricist named Lori Barth. It was while strummming on the instrument that the actress/ singer came up with the melody for "Evergreen". Paul Williams added words to Streisand's music.
She co-produced the recording with Phil Ramone. The song was chosen as the pivotal "Love Theme From 'A Star Is Born'". Streisand co-starred in the film with musician Kris Kristofferson. Elvis Presley had originally been slated for the male role.
Released as a single in late 1976, "Evergreen" reached #1 on both the Pop and Adult Contemporary charts in the USA and Canada. The disc also peaked at #3 in Britain, 4 in Ireland and 5 in Australia. The song collected an Oscar and Golden Globe Award. This meant that Streisand had now won an Academy Award both for her acting and songwriting. At the Grammy Awards, the hit song shared the Song of the Year trophy with Debbie Boone's "You Light Up My Life". Streisand also picked up Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. "Evergreen" was nominated for Record of the Year, but lost to The Eagles' "Hotel California".
Streisand re-recorded "Evergreen" in French, Italian and Spanish. A live performance with Il Divo appeared on her 'Live In Concert 2006' album. Another re-recording of the song emerged on her 2014 album 'Partners', as a duet with Babyface. Various other acts have covered the love song, including co-writer Williams on his 1977  'Classics' LP and a spine-tingling interpretation by Luther Vandross on 1994's 'Songs'  album.
This is a list made up of the songs I enjoy the most, ranked in order of preference: the higher we go, the more I cherish them. Some were released as singles, others as album tracks. Some are obscure; others were worldwide hits or have universal appeal. They aren't always the most famous or popular, but simply a personal choice. I have excluded songs from the last few years in order to get a better idea of a song's lasting impression. I hope you find some new tracks to love, or re-discover some past favourites.
A new song from the remaining Top 100 is added each weekday, while another 2 are also included from positions 1501-2000 daily. Check back here every 12 hours for an update of the 2000.
