Stevie Wonder successfully made the shift from the Little Stevie Wonder on Motown in the 1960s to a mature singer/ songwriter tackling serious issues in the 1970s. His 'Music of my Mind' album found him flexing his adult thoughts and themes. The LP featured the awe-inspiring ballad "Superwoman (Where Were You When I Needed You)".
The song has 2 main parts. It begins with Wonder singing about how his partner Mary wants to pursue an acting career. He wishes she would stay, but knows he cannot hold her back. In the 2nd portion of the song, our protagonist finds himself feeling left alone by Mary; who is by now long gone.
The sublime "Superwoman" runs for just over 8 minutes. Wonder produced the track himself. The song was released as a single in 1972. It reached #13 on the US R&B chart and peaked at #33 on the Pop equivalent.
This is a list made up of the songs I enjoy the most, ranked in order of preference: the higher we go, the more I cherish them. Some were released as singles, others as album tracks. Some are obscure; others were worldwide hits or have universal appeal. They aren't always the most famous or popular, but simply a personal choice. I have excluded songs from the last few years in order to get a better idea of a song's lasting impression. I hope you find some new tracks to love, or re-discover some past favourites.
Each weekday, a new song from the remaining Top 100 is added, while another 2 are also included from positions 1501-2000. Check back here  for an update of the 2000.
