EUROVISION 2015: What's Another Year?
The Official Leaderboard as it stands.
Ireland
leads the pack with its astonishing 7 wins in 1970, 1980, 1987, 1992, 1993.
1994 and 1996.
The battle for outright 2nd place is on this year. At
present, there is a tie involving 4 countries, all with 5 winning entries. If
betting odds and predictions prove to be accurate, the current tie will finally
be broken this year. Here are the nations in 2nd place in terms of
Eurovision victories up to 2015:
LUXEMBOURG – Won
in 1961, 1965, 1972, 1973 and 1983.
Despite
its quality songs over many decades, sadly this mighty little nation has not
competed at Eurovision since 1993. Its absence this year could mean it slips
into 3rd place.
UNITED KINGDOM – Won
in 1967, 1969 (a 4-way tie), 1976, 1981 and 1997.
The UK
has struggled to finish high in recent years. It has entered with a retro swing
song that might just change its luck, but while it has a good chance of
finishing strong, it is an unlikely winner against better songs. Most likely, the UK will slip down to equal 3rd place.
It has
been a very long wait for a 6th victory at Eurovision for the proud
nation of France. This year’s classy entry is one of its best in
years. It deserves to finish in the Top
10, but will face difficulty appealing to enough of the 40 voting nations.
SWEDEN – Wins
in 1974, 1984, 1991, 1999 and 2012.
“Heroes”
is tipped to win this year’s contest and certainly ticks enough of the boxes to
appeal to many of the 40 voting countries. With its upbeat empowering
message, it could place Sweden into 2nd position with a 6th
win. This is the most likely outcome.
Of
course, there are many strong and worthy songs among this year's crop. The top prize could go to 1 of the other 36 competing nations.
Italy,
Estonia and (debuting country) Australia are also tipped to finish strong.
A win
for The Netherlands would mean the tie for 2nd place will extend to a
5th nation!
Time
will tell…
