An Introduction To
MOTOWN
Motown Records was a small, independent label in Detroit owned by Berry Gordy Jr. Any major record company would want an artist such as Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Boyz II Men, The Commodores and Smokey Robinson on its roster. That these successful and influential talents were all on the same label makes Motown all the more incredible. During the 1960s, while the British Invasion gripped the US charts, an all-female trio was second to only The Beatles in clocking up the most #1 singles for a group: an impressive total of 12. This feat is all the more remarkable at a time when women were usually overshadowed by their male counterparts. This was also while America was undergoing a turbulent struggle for civil rights.
Against these odds, Motown- a black owned label- dominated the pop landscape with its own sound. The classics included: "I Want You Back", "Endless Love", "My Girl", "I Heard It Through the Grapevine", "Where Did Our Love Go", "My Guy", "End Of The Road", "Dancing In The Street", "What's Going On", "Superstition", "Three Times A Lady", "Stop! In The Name Of Love", "I Wish", "All Night Long (All Night)", "Reach Out, I'll Be There", "Never Can Say Goodbye", Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and "Ben".
Have a listen to the Introduction To Motown playlist on spotify. It includes many of the greats from the legendary record label, including: Diana Ross, The Jackson 5, The Marvelettes, The Four Tops, Lionel Richie, Martha & The Vandellas, Mary Wells and The Miracles.
