RING RING: ABBA
[1973]
"Ring
Ring" was ABBA's debut album. At the time, songwriters Benny Andersson
and Bjorn Ulvaeus realized that the addition of vocalists Agnetha
Faltskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad were the best interpreters of their
output. This LP maps the transfornation of the 2 female members from
backup vocalists to lead singers. Their roles would expand on the
ensuing albums from ABBA. It helped that the 2 couples were romantically
linked. 'Ring Ring' contains the title track; a pure pop gem.
It had been offered for consideration as Sweden's Eurovision entry in
1973. Curiously, it finished 3rd at the national final. Fortunately, the
band tried again the following year with "Waterloo" and the rest is now
history. 'Ring Ring' has key tracks where the group's potential as
masters of pop is evident. Along with the title song, there are the
infectious "Love Isn't Easy (But It Sure Is Hard Enough)" and rock-out
"Rock 'N' Roll Band". There are forgettable, if not sub-standard, tracks
such as "I Am Just A Girl" and "I Saw It In The Mirror". Of note is
"Disillusion", the only track co-written by Faltskog (with her then
husband Ulvaeus).
Highlight tracks: Ring Ring; Love Isn't Easy (But It Sure Is Hard Enough) & Rock 'N' Roll Band.
