MOTOWN
SONGS
THE MOTOWN SOUND:
THE WRITER/PRODUCERS
Pt.3- The Golden Years
Motown
Records was a constant presence on the pop chart throughout the 1960s
and continued beyond that golden era with a roster that boasted an
abundance of talent. Along with its flagship acts, the label attracted
creative artists that played a key role in shaping the 'Motown Sound'.
The company was served well by a capable pool of songwriters and
producers. Some were key architects of Motown's success and crossover
appeal.
HOLLAND / DOZIER / HOLLAND
Motown's greatest weapon during the 1960s on the charts was the songwriting / production team of brothers Brian and Eddie Holland and Lamont Dozier. This trio was a powerhouse, churning out an astounding succession of classics that not only embodied the Motown sound but defined the era. H/ D/ H created more than a dozen chart topping US singles for an array of acts on the Motown roster, including The Supremes, The Four Tops, Martha & The Vandellas, The Isley Brothers and Junior Walker & The All Stars. Diana Ross & The Supremes were the trio's main beneficiaries, racking up no less than 10 American #1 singles during the years 1964-7 with the trio's pop gems.
H/ D/ H left Motown in 1968 and set up their own labels: Invictus and Hot Wax. It soon became clear that Motown would never see as prolific a hit-making source and the writers never repeated the same level of success in their own right.
Many of the songs included on this blog's countdown of Motown's 200 Most Essential were written / produced by Holland - Dozier- Holland.
These include (and there are many more that were composed by each of the 3 with others):
