AUTOMATIC FOR THE PEOPLE: R.E.M.
 R.E.M. - Automatic for the People.jpg
 [1992]
For those that had been loyal fans of R.E.M. from its early days, 'Automatic For The People' was payday. Years of investing in the group's gradual progression on each of its previous albums were rewarded with the band dropping its finest work. No longer just the darlings of alt rock or college radio, R.E.M. was now a fully fledged leading rock music group. While prior releases had many moments of brilliance, on this album the band raised the bar even higher. 'Automatic For the People' offers a rich selection of moods and styles. The musicianship is par excellence. Michael Stipe's vocals target every lyric expertly. The tracks are arranged in a cohesive and astute order. There is something timeless about the quality here. "Everybody Hurts" is the best known song of the set. It elevates and sooths the listener. "Find The River" and "Nightswimming" are 2 of the most beautiful tracks the group has ever created. Radio staples "Drive" and "Man On The Moon" add an edge to the album. There are no duds on this album; just a group that has finally discovered the sound only it can deliver to the world. Almost a quarter century since its release, 'Automatic For The People' still reveals something new with each listen.
Highlight tracks:
* Nightswimming
* Find The River
