BEFORE IT WAS A HIT SONG…

These songs are well known but you may not know about the earlier attempts to score a hit record with prior versions of the same song.

Time Is On My Side

The Rolling Stones' rich catalogue includes many classics. Most of the band's songbook consists of compositions attributed to members Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. There are some exceptions. "Time Is On My Side" is one. The song was penned by Norman Meade. Jazz performer Kai Winding & His Orchestra recorded the original version in 1963. Background vocals were sung by Cissy Houston, Dionne Warwick and her sister Dee Dee. New lyrics by Jimmy Norman were added for a remake released the following year by R&B singer Irma Thomas. The Stones' version followed shortly after. This cover easily outdid the preceding takes, reaching the Top 10 in America and other countries.
