BEFORE IT WAS A HIT SONG…

These songs are well known but you may not know about the earlier attempts to score a hit record with prior versions of the same song.

The Clapping Song

Various artists have recorded remakes of "The Clapping Song". The Belle Stars scored a major hit with a 1982 cover version which peaked at #11 and 4 in the U.K. and Australia respectively. Pia Zadora brought the song back to the U.S. chart the following year, reaching #36.

The earliest release of "The Clapping Song" was a recording by Shirley Ellis in 1965. Her version climbed to #8 in America and #6 in Britain. It was re-issued in 1978.
