These songs are well known but you may not know about the earlier attempts to score a hit record with prior versions of the same song.

For Once In My Life

Stevie Wonder released the single "For Once In My Life" in 1967. It was the title track of an album issued the following year. His interpretation was uptempo and the most successful on the charts. It finished at #2 on the US Pop and Soul charts. In the UK, it peaked at #3.

Prior to Wonder's hit, the song had charted just prior, but this version only reached #91 in the U.S. Other previous interpretations were recorded by The Supremes, The Four Tops and The Temptations. All 3 were Motown acts. The earliest version is said to have been cut by another singer on that legendary label, Barbara McNair.
