THE 200 GREATEST SONGS
In 1980, TV audiences tuned in for the answer to the
question who shot J.R. on “Dallas”; Moscow hosted the Summer Olympic Games
which were boycotted by many nations; war broke out between Iran and Iraq;
Ronald Reagan was elected President of the United States and the world mourned
after John Lennon was assassinated outside his Dakota apartment in New York
City.

UPSIDE DOWN
Diana Ross
|
Until Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards were asked to create
Diana Ross’ next album, the former Supreme had exercised little control over
her career and recordings. As one of Motown’s most lucrative stars, label
boss Berry Gordy Jr. had played a significant role in making Diana Ross a
household name. The Eighties would see her make major changes. Ross would
soon leave Motown and take charge. This impending change was reflected on “Upside
Down”. Written and produced by the Chic men, it became her biggest single to
date. The song reached #1 in America (where the track also topped the Soul and
Disco charts), Europe, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. In the UK,
the disc peaked at #2.
