Beyoncé led the charge for her gender as women were becoming increasingly more empowered. In the months just prior to the global wake up call that was the viral #metoo movement, “Formation” was unleashed. Included on the highly influential singer’s ground-breaking ‘Lemonade’ album, the track was a line in the sand on many levels. Beyoncé unashamedly embraced everything that makes her who she is. “Formation” celebrated her femininity. It proudly acknowledged her Southern origins. Here was a woman confident and mighty in her dark skin. Beyoncé declares her self-affirmation. The song and its politically-charged music video take shots at police brutality and amplify the ‘Black Lives Matter’ message. Both were divisive. Some were outraged, confounded and shocked. It was a bold move for contemporary music’s most important female. She was lauded by critics for her brave commentary on race relations, capitalism and the political climate. Queen Bey is not just liberating herself from the past. She is rallying other women to join her cause. She invites them to fall into formation and rise up in unison.
