100 SONGS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
2002
💥97 Lose Yourself
Eminem
White rappers had tried to be the leading exponents of rap music before, but failed to establish themselves with sustained credibility. Among those that failed in the past are Snow and Vanilla Ice. Authentic rap and hip hop appeared to belong to custodians such as Public Enemy, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre and N.W.A. The arrival of Marshall Mathers changed everything. Initially, black rap fans did not accept this new aspiring rapper. 1997’s ‘Slim Shady’ EP thawed out the hesitation. Eminem’s music was recognized as raw, dangerous and controversial. His themes were violent, targeting women and gays. In amongst these disturbing contexts, Eminem’s talent as a rapper was undeniable. By 2000, he was at the top of his game, reaching the zenith with “Stan”. Two years later, Eminem was a trailblazer that was hailed by the mainstream. “Lose Yourself” was the single from his first film ‘8 Mile’. Along with Grammy nods, the track collected the Academy Award for Best Original Song: a first for hip hop. His place among the fundamental rappers remains unrivalled.
